THE COLBC WEEKLY ROUND-UP: 4TH-10TH OCTOBER 2021

October 12th 2021

Introducing the first edition of our new feature - The COLBC Weekly Round-Up. Every week we will offer a snapshot of the week’s JNL results and academy progress.

The weekend of the 9th/10th October 2021 would see no less than 6 teams in action around the country.

SATURDAY

The U18 girls lost on the road in Liverpool. However in a tough matchup, Coach Katie Lamond felt that the team found some strong learning opportunities. Commenting on the road trip she said: “Without several players who will contribute significantly, its was time for some of our less experienced players to step up and we saw that today. Credit to Liverpool who played hard nosed defence and showed real grit in all possessional elements.

Also in the north west, Coach Messam’s U16 boys would take a strong win that would see the Cheshire Phoenix resurgent, chasing down a double digit split. However COLBC remained composed at key junctures to close out the game at 55-60. Coach Messam was delighted saying: “It was great to work with this group of young players today, it was an emotional rollercoaster at times but very enjoyable.”

LBU arena would see a packed schedule as 3 of our teams looked to use home court advantage. Opening the slate would be the U12 girls who’s potential is very exciting. Head Coach ben Allen would get a snapshot of things to come as they matched up with Lancashire Spinners. The girls started slowly as the became familiar with one another’s game and would show significant progress throughout the 40 mins of play, falling to a strong push in the 4th quarter.

Coach Allen commented “I’m excited to see what this season brings for this young group as they have vast potential. In terms of a generation of players this is without doubt the strongest cohort we’ve had in terms of numbers and talent.”

The U14 boys premier fixture against Leicester Riders proved to be one of the most exciting games we have seen in some time at the LBU arena, with both teams showing real grit and determination. The game would see a multitude of lead changes and exciting plays from both the COLBC and Riders perimeters. Coach Weir in his debut for the club, having moved from York Eagles over the summer, was clearly impressed with his players application in a closely fought game. He cited “In such a short time, the boys have really bought in to what we are trying to do as a team and I feel this game is a great platform for our Premier league campaign.  We know it will be incredibly challenging this season with a number of strong pedigree programmes in the league.”

SUNDAY

Our U14 girls were on the road against Derbyshire Arrows in all Yorkshire contest with Coach Allen looking to help another strong generation of players with strong potential move forward. With another great opportunity for development our girls fell slightly short but Coach Ben Allen was again impressed with the effort from this exciting group of young women.

THE ACADEMY

Our COLBA academy would follow their overtime loss at highly regarded Queen Ethelburga’s in the ABL on Wednesday, with a strong result against Cheshire Phoenix in the JNL U18 Premier League on Saturday.

This relied on contrasting performances in the first and second half, with the difference being, in the 3rd and 4th quarters, COLBA showing more maturity, composure and discipline which resulted in a more selfless performance.

There were several standout performances from Flynn Wake, Terry Kodom and Valdir Isaac filling multiple areas of the statistical bracket. However most pleasing was the contribution of U16 players Akil Simpson and Marcello Maffezzoli who were playing outside the age category.
