MESSAM RETURNS TO FOSTER TALENT

September 16th 2021

COLBC are happy to announce the return of Coach Sam Messam, who will be leading our U16 BOYS Premier team in their 2021/22 campaign.

Sam has been at the club for over 5 seasons, working across several age groups and brings a wealth of experience from both on the court, and in the academic domain.

Sam has been recently appointed as the Basketball England Talent Programme and Pathway Manager. In his new role at BE, Messam will be at the forefront of improving and developing Basketball England’s Talent system and networks, working within the player pathway, Aspire and GB Youth programmes.

He has extensive experience in youth basketball, coaching the Yorkshire Regional squads at every level (U13, U15 and U17) and working within the GB performance pathway.

He currently holds the UKCC Level 4 Coaching certification, is due to graduate in the 2021/2022 class from the FIBA FECC programme, and is completing his PHD in Elite Coaching Practice. This high level academic underpinning, coupled with close to decade of experience as a senior lecturer and coach educator, makes Coach Messam a valuable asset to the club.

Coach Messam commented on returning for the 2021-22 season:

"Returning to competitive basketball is an exciting proposition and returning to work with the talented young people at the club from Leeds and the broader region is always a privilege. I hope to continue to influence our coaching

and community of practice and help with the growth of the players and staff alike."

COLBC Director Matthew Newby reflected on Coach Messam's Return.

"I am very pleased to see Sam returning to the floor in a COLBC tracksuit. He has had a strong impact on our program since his arrival with several successful seasons in the junior national league. He creates a very positive environment for his players and has fostered a number of emerging talents within our club.  Furthermore he is a great resource for our coaches who benefit from his experience and knowledge."
