MEET OUR TEAM
Get to know our talented City of Leeds Basketball Foundation staff who have an incredible range of experience and are all dedicated to the City of Leeds Basketball programme's mission to Inspire Achieve Excel.
In 2019 Director of the City of Leeds Basketball movement, Matt Newby, will celebrate 23 years coaching in the United Kingdom. He has been at the helm since the programme's inception and has dedicated himself to the promotion and development of the sport throughout his tenure with unwavering commitment.
Matt has an undergraduate degree from St Martins College Lancaster in Sports Coaching and Applied Social Sciences, he is a BE Level 3 coach and BE Coach Educator.
Matt has accrued a high level of knowledge and experience throughout his career, establishing a strong skill set in key areas of sports performance, sports development and community development. He currently directs the COL Basketball Foundation, Club and Academy as well as successfully maintaining his 12 year tenure as the Head Coach of the Leeds Beckett University Basketball program.
Administration and Office Manager
Tina Campbell joined us in September 2016 and has been integral to the development of our administrative capacity including communications, process and protocols and deployment.
Tina has 20 years of expertise in Business Administration and currently also works in the Finance and Administration department at the Yorkshire Sport Foundation.
Head Coach COL Community Programme
U18's Women's Coach
Coach Chris Savage is an up-and-coming coach in the North of England, with an incredible passion for the game of basketball.
A graduate of Leeds Beckett University, holding a degree in sports coaching, he is a valuable asset to both our community and performance pathways.
Chris is currently heavily involved with regional basketball and is coaching at the Yorkshire Regional Performance Centre. In 2018/19 he was appointed as the Yorkshire Girls U15's Head Coach for the national RDT and currently leads the girls Aspire sessions for Yorkshire.
Chris is a BE Level 2 coach and has his sights set on accessing a Level 3 qualification during the Summer of 2019.
U16's Boys Performance Coach
Sam Messam boasts a strong resume both in education and coaching with over two decades in the sports and education sectors.
Sam is currently completing his doctorate in professional practice at UCLAN, with a focus in Elite Talent performance and coaching behaviours.
Sam was appointed to the coaching staff of the England Commonwealth Games squad as an apprentice coach as a reward for his commitment to the national governing body and their performance pathway, having served as a Head Coach for the Yorkshire region at all age categories U13's, U15's and U17's . Sam has also acted as team manager for the U18's national team and has accrued a great deal of experience in both senior and junior national league structure.
Sam is a Level 4 Coach and BE educator.
U14's Boys Performance Coach
Zaman is and up and coming coach who has taken every opportunity to upskill and advance in his career. He holds an undergraduate Degree from Teeside University in Sport and Physical Activity.
Working in both the community and performance strands of the COL programme, Zaman has accrued some great experience with the Yorkshire Regional Performance Centre and Regional Squad where he has been an assistant coach at the U13's U15's and U17's levels.
Zaman is a BE Level 2 coach and has his sights set on accessing a Level 3 qualification in Summer 2019.
U16's Girls Performance Coach
Performance Coach Ben Allen has been with the Leeds programme since its inception and has shown incredible loyalty throughout the club's transitions.
Ben has worked with our girls' programme throughout his tenure and continues to give his all to the programme. He has been responsible for consistently producing players each year who make the transition to both Regional Performance Centres and regional age group representation.
He is a behavioural support specialist in primary education, currently working for the local education authority in Leeds.
Ben is a Level 2 Coach and will be taking the time to access some professional development in the Summer of 2019 by accessing the Basketball England Level 3 Award.
U14's Girls Performance Coach
Katie Lamond is a dedicated young coach who has an incredible work ethic. A former member of the Leeds programme as a junior player, she has followed the pathway to Leeds Beckett University where she is studying sports coaching. Holding BE Level 2 Certification she has accrued many hours on the floor having assisted the U14's JNL girls for the past 3 seasons. Whilst deepening her knowledge and contributing to the regional landscape as an apprentice coach with the Yorkshire U13's girls and taking the helm of U13's West Yorkshire girls in the annual regional tournament in Sheffield.
She continues to give back to the programme as a community coach and is incredibly well received by our community partners.
This season she is leading our U12's and U14's girls.
U14's and U16's Boys Performance Coach
Marcus Browne is one of our newest members of staff and has already impressed with his enthusiasm and commitment. He is a BE Level 2 coach who has as strong desire to improve all his charges.
Originally from Leeds he has played on multiple levels of the domestic game. He is currently working with our U14's (Black Team) and they are going from strength to strength. Like a number of our coaches he has worked with the Regional Performance Centre and has been an assistant coach with several of the regional representative teams.
Marcus is an incredibly gifted graffiti artist and runs his own social enterprise called the "Write Club", who's agenda is to utilise art as a means of intervention and social development for young people.
